YOUNG OSCAM ART KITCHEN (YOAK)

OSCAM invites young artists and creative producers to claim space, present their work and develop themselves as creative entrepreneurs in our: Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK). This exhibition supports young artists in reaching a broad public and creating lasting connections within the OSCAM network.

The exhibition is produced by a team of Young OSCAM trainees, supervised by the head of producing and program who guides them through the process of building an exhibition. With Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK), OSCAM aims to stay in direct contact with the new generation of makers from various backgrounds and to prepare them for a professional future in the creative industry with the focus on the museum field.

CHIMIRA NATANNA OBIEFULE

Chimira Natanna Obiefule is a Nigerian artist and researcher whose labor of love prioritizes Black queer liberation. They express their vision through the visual arts, performance lectures, and music. Obiefule develops languages for healing, using embodied knowledge as a tool of resistance. Through their practice, they are continually led by intuition, forging paths towards self-liberation.

When Obiefule first arrived in Amsterdam, fate led them to student housing in the Bijlmer. From the moment they stepped into the neighborhood, they were captivated by its vibrant culture. To their surprise, the Bijlmer felt like the closest they had ever come to home, Nigeria, while being in Europe. This experience profoundly shaped their artistic practice, grounding it in an exploration of the concept of ‘home’. The exploration has unfolded in this exhibition inviting the visitor to search for ‘home’, our inner sun, within ourselves.

For Obiefule, ‘home’ is not a fixed place but a feeling, an emotional and spiritual refuge, an inner sun that resides within us. Through ritualistic practices and the memory of home, they reclaim a connection to the earth, reminding us that connectedness transcends imposed differences.

In their collage-like paintings, Obiefule draws parallels between hairstyles, shells, and other natural forms to reflect the interconnectedness between humanity and nature. The Heart is the Home of the Rising Sun celebrates this inner sun, shaped by memories, rituals, and the profound link between identity and the natural world. Home is not where we are, it is who we are.

OSCAM verwelkomt jonge kunstenaars en creatieve producers om ruimte op te eisen, werk te presenteren en zichzelf te ontwikkelen als ondernemende makers in onze: Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK). Deze tentoonstelling ondersteunt jonge kunstenaars om een zo breed mogelijk publiek te bereiken en blijvende connecties te creëren binnen het OSCAM-netwerk.

De tentoonstelling wordt geproduceerd door de Young OSCAM trainees die door onze hoofd van productie en programma door het proces van een tentoonstellingsopbouw worden begeleid. Met de Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK) streeft OSCAM ernaar in direct contact te blijven met de nieuwe generatie makers van verschillende achtergronden en hen voor te bereiden op een professionele toekomst in de creatieve industrie.

CHIMIRA NATANNA OBIEFULE

Chimira Natanna Obiefule is een Nigeriaanse kunstenaar en onderzoeker die zich inzet voor de bevrijding van zwarte queer gemeenschappen. In diens werk, dat beeldende kunst, performance, lezingen en muziek omvat, deelt die diens visie. Obiefule richt zich vooral op de kracht van lichamelijke kennis als vorm van verzet en onderzoekt intuïtief de weg naar zelfbevrijding door middel van kunst.

Toen Obiefule voor het eerst in Amsterdam aankwam, bracht het lot die naar een studentenwoning in de Bijlmer. Al snel voelde Obiefule zich aangetrokken tot de levendige cultuur en ontdekte, tot hun verbazing, dat de Bijlmer het dichtst bij ‘thuis’ voelde van alles wat die ooit in Europa hadden ervaren. Deze ervaring werd een belangrijke bron van inspiratie voor diens artistieke praktijk, die geworteld is in een onderzoek naar het idee van ‘thuis’. Dit onderzoek heeft zich ontwikkeld tot de huidige tentoonstelling, die bezoekers uitnodigt om ‘thuis’ te verkennen als de innerlijke zon van binnenuit.

Voor Obiefule is thuis geen vaste plek, maar een gevoel, een emotioneel en spiritueel toevluchtsoord, een innerlijke zon die in ons allen schuilt. Door middel van rituele praktijken en herinneringen aan thuis herwint Obiefule een verbinding met de aarde, waarmee die laat zien dat verbondenheid de opgelegde verschillen overstijgt.

In diens collage-achtige schilderijen trekt Obiefule parallellen tussen zwarte haarstijlen, schelpen en andere natuurlijke vormen, waarmee die de onderlinge verbondenheid tussen de mens en de natuur benadrukt.
