Carbon Stories: A Tale of Two Cities

The Dutch G5 cities, including Eindhoven and Rotterdam, are aiming for Paris Proof construction. The past years municipalities have elaborated various Paris Proof policies and experiments. What can we learn from the different approaches to reaching Paris Proof? What worked well, what barriers have been taken down, what needs attention, what is a NO GO going forward? Could the experiences inform a next step: aligning the municipal policies to create a Paris Proof practice on an impactful scale? Aligning the bigger Dutch cities towards a more unified framework for Paris Proof construction can provide clarity for a substantial part of the Dutch construction volume, accelerating towards a Paris Proof construction practice on a truly relevant scale.

Time to discuss Paris Proof projects with policymakers of some of the most ambitious cities in The Netherlands: Rotterdam and Eindhoven. What do they have in common? What local lessons of the past can be applied everywhere in NL? What are typical local factors and should certain differences in approach remain? And why? Could this be a model for the national government? What does it mean for the market? When do we start?

Alderman Chantal Zeegers of the Municipality of Rotterdam and alderman Rik Thijs of the Municipality of Eindhoven will share their city’s policy on building sustainable. Followed by a presentation of Rob Bogaarts (Building Balance) on the implementation of biobased construction in housing associations in the region of Eindhoven. Robbert Groeneveld (Woonstad) will share lessons learned from Rotterdam’s timber social housing project Ravensteyn.
