BOI AKIH is more than music, it is a movement of sound and feeling. Formed around award-winning vocalist and lyricist Monica Akihary (Boy Edgar Prize 2023) and guitarist/composer Niels Brouwer, this duo creates a unique musical language.
Their energetic music transcends genres and cultures and is characterized by a deep connection with both jazz and European and Moluccan music traditions.
It is an adventurous entanglement of contemporary sounds and age-old traditions. Poetic vocals, sometimes raw and intuitive, dance together with layered guitar compositions. Together they form a dialogue between worlds in English and Haruku (a Moluccan language) in which personal stories and universal emotions come together.
From the North Sea Jazz Festival and Jazzfest Berlin to the Freedom Concert on Ambon for 20,000 people. Their work can be heard all over the world. Renowned international media, such as BBC Radio, VPRO Vrije Geluiden and Radio France, also play their work.
For anyone who dares to look further: BOI AKIH is an imaginary world journey. One where improvisation and identity merge. Music that takes you along, touches you and makes you think.
BOI AKIH: The voice is a beautiful instrument and the guitar has a beautiful voice.
