About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 30 minutes

*NOTE: THIS IS AN EVENT FOR (QUEER) BLACK PEOPLE*

Join us for a discussion on bell hooks' Art On My Mind, a powerful collection of essays that delves into the intersections of Black art, identity, and culture. From photography and architecture to the representation of Black people in the art world, hooks invites us to deeply reflect on how we understand ourselves through art. Through in-depth conversations with artists, this book reveals the stories behind their work and explores the significance of Blackness within their creations.

We encourage you to read as much of the book as you’d like. In case you have limited time, we’d encourage you to at least read the following essays:

  • In Our Glory (photography)
  • Diasporic Landscapes of Longing (the Black identity)
  • Women Artists (feminism within the art world)
  • Workers for Artistic Freedom (for funders)
  • Black Vernacular (the politics of designing space / architecture)

💭 DAM’s philosophy (Deconstructing Abolitionist Material)

* The DAM Book Club is a radical and progressive space in Rotterdam where Black (queer) folks come together to imagine liberation.
* Our gatherings have an anti-oppression stance, meaning we try not to reproduce harmful dynamics from society. We therefore center dark skin, queer and femme voices. Transphobic, sexist, ableist or otherwise harmful ideas have no place in the club.
* As we aim to dismantle exclusionary ideas within ourselves, reflecting on our positionality as we enter conversations is key.
