Hoeveel tijd besteed jij eigenlijk aan je huishouden? En helpt technologie om dat wat minder en makkelijker te maken? Kunstenaar Sjef van Beers, die in zijn werk graag alledaagse digitale interfaces ontmantelt, ging op onderzoek uit en kwam tot verhelderende inzichten die hij verwerkte in een installatie met handscanners uit de supermarkt: The Cowan Paradox.

Al in de jaren '70 deed historica Ruth Schwartz Cowan de verrassende ontdekking dat ondanks de enorme technologische vooruitgang in het huishouden tussen 1870 en 1970, de tijd die mensen aan huishoudelijk werk besteedden vrijwel hetzelfde bleef. Ze noemde dit de "Industriële Revolutie in het Huis", en haar bevindingen blijken nog steeds te kloppen. Uit recent onderzoek blijkt dat in 1900 een volwassene gemiddeld 26 uur per week aan huishoudelijke taken besteedt, terwijl dit in 2005 slechts met twee uur was verminderd tot 24 uur per week. Al die handige apparaten en gemakken die in de 20e eeuw (en daarna) ons huis binnendrongen, hebben dus weinig tot geen tijdswinst opgeleverd. Maar op welke manieren hebben deze innovaties ons leven dan wél daadwerkelijk veranderd?

Door de zelfscanner als materiaal te nemen, legt Van Beers de twijfelachtige status van deze vorm van 'automatisering' bloot. Waar vroeger de kassamedewerker de producten scande en afrekende, moet de consument nu zelf aan de slag. Het werk is dus niet verdwenen, maar simpelweg verschoven. De installatie zoomt in op soortgelijke innovaties, van koelkast tot naaimachines, die hebben bijgedragen aan de verschuiving van de huiselijke omgeving als ruimte waarin gewerkt wordt, naar een op consumptie gerichte ruimte en wat dat betekent voor de verandering van huishoudelijk werk.

How much time do you actually spend on household chores? And does technology really make it quicker or easier? Artist Sjef van Beers, who enjoys dismantling everyday digital interfaces in his work, set out to investigate and arrived at some eye-opening insights, which he incorporated into an installation using supermarket hand scanners: The Cowan Paradox.

Back in the 1970s, historian Ruth Schwartz Cowan made the surprising discovery that despite major technological advancements in the home between 1870 and 1970, the amount of time people spent on housework remained virtually the same. She dubbed it the “Industrial Revolution in the Home,” and her findings still hold true today. Recent studies show that in 1900, adults spent an average of 26 hours a week on housework. By 2005, that had dropped by just two hours, to 24 hours per week. So all the handy appliances and conveniences that entered our homes in the 20th century (and beyond) have delivered little to no time savings. But in what ways do have these innovations actually changed our lives?

By using the self-scanner as a material, Van Beers exposes the questionable status of this form of “automation.” Where once a cashier would scan the items and handle the transaction, now the consumer is expected to do the work themselves. The work hasn't disappeared, it's simply been displaced. The installation looks at similar innovations, from refrigerators to sewing machines, that have helped transform the domestic space from a space of labor into one centered around consumption, raising questions about what that shift has really meant for how we live and work at home.
