About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Bohdan Kryzhanovsky presents his book Architecture After War: A Reader. The book contains essays on the post-war reconstruction of cities and buildings in the light of the current war in Ukraine. These essays focus on the human experience of the post-war built environment.

Loss of rituals

Architecture is intimately linked to the past, to culture and to collective memory. We always build and design in an existing context, and every building is the result of hundreds of previous buildings. Architecture allows us to communicate through buildings and to transmit experiences, emotions and cultures.

The destruction of buildings therefore means not only the practical loss of infrastructure, shelter and environment, but also the loss of language, of daily life, of rituals, of homecomings, meetings and family celebrations, and above all of the people who live behind the curtains.

The editor of the collection of essays, Bohdan Kryzhanovsk (Ukraine), tells his personal story and explains his vision based on the book, followed by a conversation with Fokke Moerel and Jan Knikker (MVRDV), who co-wrote one of the essays.
