Manderin Book Club: Becoming the Second Generation
Bring a book connected to 'Becoming the second generation', share your story and listen to others while exploring this theme.
How do you (or your children) define yourself while living between cultures, languages, generations, or places? What are your thoughts when talking about identity, belonging, inheritance, and change?
In this edition• of the Mandarin Book Club, you are invited to bring a book connected to the theme Becoming the New Second Generation. Briefly introduce your chosen book to the group; we will exchange thoughts, experiences, and reflections together.
You can explore the theme in different ways:
How does someone become part of a new society?
What does 'integration' or 'fitting in' mean to you?
What happens when multiple cultures, languages, and traditions meet within one person
or one family?
What does it mean to belong?
The book club will be hosted by Rachel Wu, Little Book Project, in collaboration with Taiwan Culture Association Netherlands. Whether you grew up as a second-generation, raising children between cultures, or are new to the Netherlands and exploring where and how to fit in, everyone has a unique story. Bring a book, come with an open heart and ear to the Mandarin Book Club.

•Each edition of the Mandarin Book Club is inspired by a selected book and theme, and participants are invited to bring a book of their own that connects to the topic. Share what you are reading, listen to others’ recommendations, and exchange ideas, experiences, and reflections in a welcoming and informal setting. The Mandarin Book Club is part of Bibliotheek Rotterdam’s Van de stad programme. Through this initiative, Rotterdam residents are invited to contribute their perspectives and inspire additions to the library’s collection. Together, we explore the books, stories, and ideas that move us and help create a library that is not only about Rotterdam, but truly belongs to Rotterdam.
